Reporting

Schools are required to report on student progress at least twice a year.

At Clyde Quay School, we currently send home reports at the end of Term 1 (Snapshots) and start of Term 4. These times have been carefully considered.

Term 1 reports allow us to meet with families and give them accurate information early (to then create any plans for support if required).

A full report at the start of Term 4, gives parents a picture of the progress over the year and leaves us time to continue with supporting children before the summer holidays.

At any time during the year, parents are always welcome to discuss their children’s progress and learning with the classroom teacher.

On our reports, we give children “best fit” marks that reflect how they are achieving within the New Zealand Curriculum. A “best fit” is a judgement made by the teacher that takes into account all of the information we have about the child. This includes assessments, observations and the standard of work they can complete in class over a period of time.

Assessment

Children’s achievement is tracked throughout the year using a range of formal assessments.

The NZ Curriculum provides progress indicators that children must demonstrate at each Year Level. The teachers are familiar with these resources and use them to inform and guide the teaching and learning that takes place within their classrooms.

Formal assessments vary between year levels, but are completed in Reading, Writing and Maths. Some examples of assessments we use are:

Juniors - Phonics testing, BSLA taumata assessments, writing samples, maths knowledge and strategy checks.

Seniors - PAT testing in reading comprehension, maths and science, 1:1 reading (running records), spelling tests, Maths reviews, BSLA testing.

Parents are always welcome to view student assessments, however as stated above, these feed into creating a “best fit”.

We share results of the PAT testing on the senior snapshot report. If you want to look at the school policies around Reporting and Assessing Student Learning, these can be found on “SchoolDocs”. Instructions on accessing SchoolDocs are on the “Board of Trustees”.

If you have any further questions about these topics, feel free to talk to your child’s teacher.
